Ads on HBO Max

Ads play during live events. You may also see ads if you're subscribed to the Basic with Ads plan.

First, check which subscription plan you have:

If you have the Basic with Ads plan, you can change your plan to Standard or Premium to watch shows and movies without ads. Live events have ads regardless of your plan.

From time to time, all subscription plans may contain promotional messaging for content or services that relate to HBO Max content but are available outside of HBO Max (like Mortal Kombat and Game of Thrones companion video games) which may play before shows and movies. To skip these promos choose the Skip button.

During shows and movies, you can expect about 6 minutes of ads per hour (Basic with Ads plan). When an ad break starts, the number of ads in the ad break appears on screen. There's also a timer that counts down to the end of the ad.

Ad breaks during kids and family content have bumpers to let you know when an ad break starts and ends.

You can pause a show or movie to see the location of ad breaks on the progress bar.

Sports: The number of ads during live sports will vary. Live sports have the same commercials that air during the TV broadcast of the event on TBS, TNT, or truTV.

Live events included with Sports have ads.

No, fast forward and skip aren't available when an ad is playing. If you'd like to watch shows and movies without ads, change your plan to the Standard or Premium plan. Live sports have ads regardless of your plan.

Live sports and events have ads regardless of your plan. When you join a live stream during an ad break, you'll only watch the remainder of the ad break in progress.

You can pause an ad break, but you can't skip ads.

You may see a specific brand more often while watching a series, a long movie, or a similar genre (like comedy). Brands can also sponsor shows and movies. When you're watching sponsored content, you may see a similar ad at the beginning of each episode.
